As the New Year rolled around, we found ourselves looking at our Mission Statement. Who are we as a company? How do we want to move forward? What do we want to achieve creatively?
We found ourselves returning over and over to one of our key mandates: to be gentle on the planet. Gentle on the planet means using the most sustainable materials that we can find. It means considering how a thing is made, and where, and even why. For us it means employing local people. And it also means striving to create as little waste as possible.
In clothing manufacturing there can be tons of waste – literally. Off-cuts of fabric, imperfect or damaged items and things that are incorrectly cut, sized or labeled ; all of these can wind up in a landfill. Not to mention the waste created by the manufacturing of the actual textiles.
So in our small scale manufacturing process, we have been striving to find ways to reuse every useable piece of fabric, and to waste as little as possible. We hand print our fabric in large amounts. After the printing is complete we cut out the garments. There are often lots of small, oddly shaped pieces left over. We save these, sort them by colour and print, and we make them into new things. Our Remnant Scarves have been a popular item for a few years now, and come in at a low price making them a perfect gift.
Now we have added our Circle Scarf –a new style of remnant scarf. It is fully reversible. It can be looped 1, 2 even 3 times around the neck, and it adds a lovely splash of colour to any outfit. Wear it loose to add colour and style. Wear it tightly around the neck to add warmth as well.
Circle scarves are currently available in four colour combos in our Nelson BC store and on our website right here:
